Ice Nine Kills

Enter the chilling and highly theatrical world of Ice Nine Kills (INK), the American metalcore band that has uniquely carved out a niche by masterfully blending brutal riffs with intricate narratives inspired by classic horror films and literature. Formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2000, INK, led by the visionary frontman Spencer Charnas, has evolved from their pop-punk origins into a multimedia juggernaut.

The band’s genesis began when high school friends Spencer Charnas and Jeremy Schwartz decided to form “Ice Nine” after attending a Goldfinger concert. The name itself is a clever nod to the fictional substance from Kurt Vonnegut’s dystopian novel Cat’s Cradle, hinting at their literary leanings even early on. While their initial sound leaned towards pop-punk and ska, the departure of co-founder Jeremy Schwartz in 2009 left Charnas as the sole original member, prompting a significant shift in their musical direction towards a heavier, more experimental metalcore sound.

This transformation began to solidify with albums like Safe Is Just a Shadow (2010) and The Predator Becomes The Prey (2014), which saw them refine their blend of aggressive instrumentation, clean vocals, and visceral screams. However, it was with the release of “Every Trick in the Book” in 2015 that Ice Nine Kills truly found their unique voice. This album was a concept record, with each song meticulously crafted around a famous piece of literature, like The Exorcist and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

Their breakthrough into widespread recognition arrived with “The Silver Scream” (2018), an album entirely dedicated to classic horror films. Each track was a meticulously detailed homage to an iconic movie, from “The American Nightmare” (A Nightmare on Elm Street) to “Stabbing in the Dark” (Halloween) and “A Grave Mistake” (The Crow). The album spawned elaborate music videos that expanded the horror narratives, often featuring special guest appearances from horror film legends. This concept was so successful that it launched their “INKverse” – a sprawling, self-directed horror storyline that plays out across their albums, music videos, and even their live shows.

The band’s current lineup, led by Spencer Charnas (vocals), features Ricky Armellino (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Joe Occhiuti (bass, backing vocals), and Patrick Galante (drums). While Dan Sugarman is officially the lead guitarist, he has stepped back from touring in recent years due to personal reasons, with other musicians filling his live role. Their live performances are a full-blown theatrical production, complete with elaborate costumes, props, and stagecraft that bring the horror movie themes to life, making their shows an unmissable experience for both metalheads and horror fans.
