Dropkick Murphys

Dropkick Murphys are an American Celtic punk band formed in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1996. Ken Casey, a singer and bassist, has been the band’s only constant member. Other current members include drummer Matt Kelly, singer Al Barr, guitarist James Lynch, and multi-instrumentalists Tim Brennan and Jeff DaRosa.

The band was initially signed to independent punk record label Hellcat Records; they released five albums for the label and built a reputation locally through constant touring and yearly St. Patrick’s Day week shows, held in and around Boston. The 2004 single, “Tessie” became the band’s first mainstream hit and one of their biggest charting singles to date.

Dropkick Murphys music blends traditional Irish folk influences with punk rock energy and aggression. Influenced by bands like The Pogues and Stiff Little Fingers, Dropkick Murphys’ sound features spirited vocals, aggressive guitar riffs, and prominent use of instruments like bagpipes and tin whistle. They are known for anthemic songs that celebrate working-class themes, Irish heritage, and resilience. Their popularity stems from their infectious live shows, solidarity with Boston culture, and a devoted fanbase drawn to their spirited blend of punk attitude with Celtic folk traditions.
