The genesis of Dark Tranquillity began under the name Septic Broiler, with original members Mikael Stanne (who started on rhythm guitar before becoming the iconic vocalist), Niklas Sundin (guitar), Anders Fridén (vocals, later of In Flames), Anders Jivarp (drums), and Martin Henriksson (bass). After changing their name to Dark Tranquillity, they quickly found their stride, and their 1993 debut album, Skydancer, showcased a nascent yet potent form of the melodic death metal sound that would soon define a genre. A pivotal moment occurred when Anders Fridén departed to join In Flames, prompting Mikael Stanne to take over vocal duties, a role he has masterfully held ever since.
