Heaven Shall Burn

Ignite the flames of metalcore and melodic death metal with Heaven Shall Burn, the German powerhouse known for their crushing riffs, unrelenting energy, and fiercely outspoken political stance. Formed in Saalfeld, Thuringia, in 1996, the band has consistently delivered a potent blend of aggression and melody, setting themselves apart with profound lyrical themes and an unwavering commitment to their convictions.

The genesis of Heaven Shall Burn began with guitarist Maik Weichert and drummer Matthias Voigt. The lineup solidified with the addition of vocalist Marcus Bischoff, bassist Eric Bischoff (cousins), and later guitarist Alexander Dietz (who also produces many of their albums). This core lineup has remained remarkably consistent, allowing them to refine their signature sound. An interesting fact about their early days is that they initially went by the names “Before the Fall” and “Consense” before settling on Heaven Shall Burn, a name that, while seemingly dark, is actually a metaphor for challenging false perceptions and confronting uncomfortable truths rather than an anti-religious statement.

Their breakthrough arrived with albums like “Antigone” (2004) and “Deaf to Our Prayers” (2006), which showcased their evolving sound, a potent mix of Gothenburg-style melodic death metal riffing with the raw intensity and breakdowns of metalcore. Tracks like “The Weapon They Fear” and “Counterweight” became fan favourites, establishing their reputation for intricate yet brutal songwriting.

What truly makes Heaven Shall Burn unique, beyond their musical prowess, is their profound commitment to social and political activism. Unlike many bands who merely hint at political themes, Heaven Shall Burn explicitly tackles issues such as anti-racism, anti-fascism, animal rights, environmental protection, and social justice. All members of the band are vegan or vegetarian, and many adhere to a straight-edge philosophy, deeply embodying the principles they advocate in their lyrics. They’ve used their platform to support various causes, including a tsunami benefit single in 2005. This ethical backbone makes them more than just a metal band; they are a voice for change.

The band’s current lineup consists of Marcus Bischoff on vocals, Maik Weichert and Alexander Dietz on guitars, Eric Bischoff on bass, and Christian Bass on drums (who joined in 2013). Their albums often top the German charts, with Veto (2013) reaching number two and “Of Truth and Sacrifice” (2020) hitting number one, a testament to their enduring popularity and the resonance of their message. “Of Truth and Sacrifice,” a sprawling double album, showcased their most ambitious work to date, incorporating orchestral elements and a deeper exploration of societal issues.
