The origin story of BABYMETAL is as unique as their sound. Their early releases, like “Doki Doki Morning” (2011) and “Ijime, Dame, Zettai” (2013), quickly garnered attention. The latter, with its message against bullying, became their major label debut. A pivotal moment arrived in 2013 when Suzuka Nakamoto “graduated” from Sakura Gakuin (a system where members leave upon graduating from junior high school). Unusually for an idol sub-unit, management decided that BABYMETAL would continue as an independent act, a decision that proved to be a masterstroke. The release of “Gimme Chocolate!!” in 2014, with its viral music video, catapulted BABYMETAL into international consciousness. The song’s blend of furious thrash metal riffs, a driving beat, and an undeniably catchy, pop-infused chorus, delivered by the three frontwomen, divided audiences but undeniably made a global impact. Their self-titled debut album, BABYMETAL, released in 2014, topped iTunes metal charts in the UK, USA, and Canada, and even broke into the US Billboard 200.
