How to Stay Hydrated and Healthy in the Pit: A Veteran's Guide
1. Hydration Starts Before the Show
The 6-2-1 Rule
Six hours before doors: a full glass of water with breakfast. Two hours before: another. One hour before: a final glass — then stop chugging so you're not desperate halfway through the openers.
Add Electrolytes
Plain water alone won't replace what you sweat out. A cheap sachet of electrolyte powder in your water bottle is the single best £0.50 investment you'll make all weekend.
2. Dress for Survival, Not Just Style
Lightweight Tank > Heavy Tee
Indoor pits hit 30°C+ within twenty minutes. A breathable cotton tank keeps you from cooking. Your t-shirt collection lives to fight another day.
Pre-Broken-In Boots Only
Closed-toe, ankle support, already comfortable. New boots in the pit = blisters by song three. Wear them around the house for a week minimum.
Pockets You Can Trust
Phone, ID, cash, earplugs — keep them in zipped or buttoned pockets. Anything that can fall out, will.
3. Know the Signs Before They Knock You Down
Red Flags
Stopped sweating. Chills in a hot crowd. Confusion. Tunnel vision. Any of these = leave immediately. Tell security if it's bad.
Buddy System
If you're with mates, pick a meet-up spot before the headliner. If anyone vanishes for more than two songs, go check.
4. Use Water Stations and Look Out for Each Other
Ask Security
Most barrier security carry water and earplugs. They are 100% there to help — that's literally their job. Wave, point, say 'water' — they'll get you sorted.
Crowdsurfer Etiquette
Don't drop people. Don't grab where you shouldn't. Pass them to the front quickly. The crowd that takes care of crowdsurfers gets remembered.
5. Eat Smart Before You Go In
Salt Is Your Friend
Pretzels, salted nuts, crisps — a small salty snack 30 minutes before doors helps you retain the water you've been drinking all day.
Skip the Energy Drink Stack
Caffeine + alcohol + heat + adrenaline is a one-way ticket to the medic tent. Pick one stimulant or none.
6. Pace Yourself Like You Mean to Last
Pick Your 4 Songs
Before the show, decide which 4 songs you absolutely want to be deep in the pit for. Recover between them. Trust me.
The Edge Is Not the Pit
You can headbang and shout along from three rows back without getting steamrolled. Save the front for the songs that actually deserve it.
7. Aftercare Is Half the Game
Replenish, Don't Rinse
Plain water is good but you've sweated out salts. An electrolyte drink, miso soup, or even a salty broth restores what you've actually lost.
Sleep Is the Real Fix
Eight hours minimum after a heavy gig. Naps don't cut it. The day-after grogginess is dehydration plus poor sleep — fix both and you're good to go again.
The Pre-Show Checklist (Save This)
Hydrate All Day
Three glasses of water spread out, not chugged. Add electrolytes once.
Eat 90 Minutes Before
Carbs + protein + a little salt. Nothing greasy, nothing huge.
Lightweight, Dark, Broken-In
Tanktop or thin tee, something dark, footwear you trust. Layers for the walk home.
Earplugs in Pocket
Even cheap ones save your hearing. The high-fidelity sets we wrote about are worth it.
ID + Cash in a Zipped Pocket
Phone in a separate pocket. Bank card optional — you don't need to be tapping at the bar mid-headliner.
Pick a Meet Spot
If anything goes wrong, this is where you go. Bonus: it works as a 'I lost my mates' fallback too.
Know Your 4 Songs
The ones you're going hardest for. Pace everything else around them.
