Dimmu Borgir

Enter the majestic and malevolent world of Dimmu Borgir, the Norwegian symphonic black metal titans who have captivated and often challenged the metal elite since their formation in Jessheim in 1993. Their sound, a grandiose fusion of searing black metal aggression, intricate orchestral arrangements, and chilling atmospheric layers, has cemented their status as one of the most influential and commercially successful bands in the extreme metal scene.

The name “Dimmu Borgir” itself is as intriguing as their music; it’s derived from Dimmuborgir, a dramatic volcanic formation in Iceland, which, in Icelandic, Faroese, and Old Norse, translates to “dark cities” or “dark castles/fortresses.” This perfectly encapsulates the band’s aesthetic: dark, epic, and imposing.

Dimmu Borgir was founded by Shagrath (Stian Tomt Thoresen – initially drums, then lead vocals), Silenoz (Sven Atle Kopperud – rhythm guitar, initial lead vocals), and Tjodalv (drums). Their early sound, showcased on the 1994 EP Inn i evighetens mørke (“Into the Darkness of Eternity”) and the 1994 full-length For All Tid (“For All Time”), was more raw and traditional Norwegian black metal. However, it was with albums like Stormblåst (1996) and particularly Enthrone Darkness Triumphant (1997), their first release on Nuclear Blast, that they began to fully embrace the symphonic elements that would become their hallmark. This shift, incorporating prominent keyboards and more polished production, helped them reach a wider global audience, though it also drew criticism from some black metal purists.

An interesting  aspect of Dimmu Borgir’s approach is their ambition to integrate classical music. They have famously performed with a full orchestra and choir, notably at the Wacken Open Air Festival and in their home country, creating a truly immersive and epic live experience that elevates their music beyond traditional metal confines. This dedication to grandiosity is evident in their complex song structures and their use of Latin lyrical phrases, adding a layer of scholarly darkness to their themes of Satanism, anti-Christianity, and the occult.

The band has experienced numerous lineup changes over the years, a common trait in the volatile world of extreme metal. However, the consistent vision has largely remained with founding members Shagrath and Silenoz, who are the official core of the band. Key long-term touring members have included Daray (Dariusz Brzozowski) on drums (since 2008), Gerlioz (Geir Bratland) on keyboards (since 2010), and Victor Brandt on bass (since 2018). In recent and significant news, Galder, their long-standing lead guitarist who had been with the band since 2000, announced his departure in August 2024. However, in June 2025, Dimmu Borgir announced Kjell Åge “Damage” Karlsen (of Chrome Division) as their new lead guitarist for touring and session duties, ensuring the band’s powerful live sound continues.

Dimmu Borgir’s discography boasts a strong run of critically acclaimed albums, including Spiritual Black Dimensions (1999), Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia (2001), and Death Cult Armageddon (2003). Their last album of original material, Eonian, was released in 2018, marking an almost eight-year gap since its predecessor. More recently, in December 2023, they released Inspiratio Profanus, an album of cover songs previously released on various EPs and compilations.
